The Dead Magic Exists in Sangay

I have the answer! I know where the physical connection point exists for the dead magic. Well, truth be told, I had no idea. I have never heard of such a thing. But thankfully, the seer was able to "guess" the right location because of her ability to sense magic. She has proven to be quite useful.

It turns out the physical connection point for the dead magic exists at the Sangay Volcano. If you do not know where that is, I am not surprised. I had no idea either. However, it turns out that it is an active volcano in central Ecuador, a sort of natural world surrogate for the dead magic volcanoes that exist within the Realm of Dead Magic.

And that is the final piece of the puzzle we have been searching for. Now, all we need is the new Wizard of Lightning to return from the Realm of Lightning Magic, and we will be ready to locate the final fragment of The Box of Death. And that means I am one step closer to meeting whatever sort of destiny I am meant to fulfill. I have to admit that I am a bit anxious at the prospect of that destiny. I have no idea what is in store for me. I only hope I manage to survive.

Physical Connection Points

If you've read Book 2, you know that the connection between the Realm of Magic and the natural world comes in the form of six magical connection points. It seems that the connection point for my magic - water magic - exists deep down inside the Mariana Trench. For those of you who don't know your geography, that is the deepest part of the natural world's oceans, so I guess it would make a whole lot of sense that my magic's physical connection point would be there.

And so, I'll have go there and establish some sort of physical connection with the water magic deep down inside the darkness of that trench. Supposedly, that is going to help us figure out how to find the final fragment of The Box of Death.

And that means the climactic battle with Malo is getting closer. I'm a little nervous about that. After all, we've had difficulty fending off his golems, fighting our friend Stanley (who has become Mastema), and defeating Dr. Bones - not to mention the difficulty we've had with Malo himself. Yikes! It sounds even worse that I originally thought. This is definitely not going to be fun.

Why Are We Just Now Learning About This?

Why is it that I always feel like I'm in the dark until Nikko decides to turn the light on? He keeps these little tidbits about magic - like fairies and potions - secret until the time is right to reveal them to us. This has happened so many times since I became sparked as a wizard, and it's quite frustrating.

Here's what I've learned. Apparently, one of the Tomes of Magic back in the Realm of Light Magic deals very specifically with potions. Each section of the tome is devoted to potions of a particular type of magic, and each of us wizards can only read the potion recipes that correspond with our sparks.

I've also learned that potions have a list of ingredients that will inevitably include one of us using some of our magic to give the potion its power. According to Nikko, how we combine the ingredients - and our spark - determines whether or not the potion will even work and how well it will work. If we mess something up, the potion might even have unintended effects.

Let me say, that sounds like a good reason to follow the recipe. I'm not all that eager to see the unintended effects of a potion that wasn't made right. In my experience, limited as it is, "unintended" means "bad." So, we'll see what's in this tome, and if I find a potion worth making, I will definitely follow the recipe.

I Remember Potions, Too

Balthazar mentioned that he never really found potions to be all that useful. Quite frankly, my experience has been much the same thing. About sixty years ago, my Teacher and Protector, Burgess, introduced me to potions.

You see, their effects are usually very short-lived, which means that whatever you are trying to accomplish isn't going to last for very long. It would be just my luck that a potion would fail right at the most inopportune time (like an invisibility potion wearing off while I was standing in the middle of a throng of powerful enemies).

If you add the fact that their shelf life tends not to be all that long, potions are rather limited. I've had the need to make potions a couple of times over the years, though not lately. However, perhaps our impending battle with Malo over the Box of Death will present an opportunity to use a potion or two.

Balthazar makes a compelling argument about looking for anything that might help protect the normals in whatever sort of confrontation is going to occur. They are my friends, and if a potion can help to keep them safe, then so be it. The Three Wizards and I will look to see if there is anything useful.

How To Stop Malo

So, according to the fairies, to find the final fragment of The Box of Death we are going to have to locate the physical connection points with each of the six types of magic. We are still waiting for Darius to return to us from the Realm of Lightning Magic, but we already know where his physical connection point is. The problem we have is that we aren't sure exactly where the physical connection point is for the dead magic. The fairies were unable to tell us that.

And that has created a bit of a problem, because Balthazar doesn't know. Heck, he didn't know that such a physical connection point even existed. And so, here we are, so close to figuring out the last piece of the puzzle, but no idea where to start searching for that last piece.

Unfortunately, if we don't figure it out soon, it won't matter. Malo will have already found the final fragment of the artifact, and the natural world as we know it may cease to exist. It will be overrun by goblins, skeletons, and even more powerful creatures. The secret existence of magic will no longer be a secret, and the world will pay for our failure to keep that secret.
