An Interesting Conversation

So, I had an interesting conversation with Michael McCoy last week. If you have read the books, you will recall that Michael is the leader of the group of Advocates, members of the Sentinels - normals who know of the existence of the wizards and help them fend off the forces of dead magic in the natural world.

He has had several conversations with some of the Historians - members of the Sentinels who observe and document the battles but never get involved - in our attempts to replace Stanley and Tasha.

However, it seems no one with whom he has spoken is interested in going from neutral observer to gun-toting advocate. I guess I should not be surprised. Most of those folks discovered the existence of the wizards by chance and were immune to the perception-warping effects of magic. Though most people re-interpret magical events so they fit within their common sense of reality (as happened during the zombie invasion), those who are immune to the effect - for whatever reason - often end up as members of the Sentinels.

They typically have no interest in toting around guns and magic-tipped stakes, putting their lives on the line to fight goblins, zombies, and other creatures. No, at best, they typically like to remain in the background, jotting down observations that can be recorded in the Chronicles. And so far, none of them seem to be jumping at the chance to go from historian to combatant. And that means we might be a bit short-handed for a while. I suppose I should not be surprised.

The Sentinels have played an important role in Books 1 and 2, and they play a similar role in Book 3: Pure Magic, coming soon.
